On the manuscript, the poet relates some biographical data and his thoughts on everyone having the right to a decent job and wage. He says his poem "The Man with the Hoe" was translated into 40 languages, and he collected three full barrels of newspaper clippings.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901).
